Sweater #20 is a comfortable affair, something that could be worn to a Christmas party or function as sleep wear. A cadre of delightful penguins clad in hats and scarves sled down the snow covered fleece. More Happy Feet than March of the Penguins, these flightless birds know how to have a good time.

Goodwill’s Power of Work Campaign

Last year, Goodwill Industries of Houston launched their strategic fundraising thrust called the Power of Work Campaign. The campaign seeks to raise funds to provide education, training, job opportunities and human services to people with disabilities or other barriers to employment so that they may become productive, independent members in our community enjoying life to its fullest possible potential. The goal is self-sufficiency through opening 25 new Goodwill stores and corresponding Donation Centers [1].

Ways in which the the Power of Work Campaign underscores the current need in the Houston area:

  • Everyone needs and deserves the opportunity to work and to support themselves
  • The unemployment rate in the Houston area is 4.5% – at least 210,000 people without jobs and means of supporting themselves and their families.
  • 140,000 individuals on our area struggle with mental illness
  • More than one million people in Texas are classified as disabled

Each new Goodwill store, once built, creates new jobs, can generate more than $1 million each year in earned revenue and provide training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled men and women who would otherwise not be able to develop job skills or find employment. Simply stated, Goodwill provides the strongest proverbial “hand up” to those who would otherwise always be relegated to living with their “hand out.”

As of June 30, 2008, Goodwill is 68% towards their goal [2]

GOAL: $15,000,000
DOLLARS RAISED TO DATE (June ’08): $10,160,530
